Cooks River Bridge
This river once held the dubious honour of being known as Australia’s most polluted river. In the 1970s, it was a toxic cocktail of diesel, mercury, battery and cyanide, taking in sewage and waste dumps. Natural wildlife in the area had disappeared, swimming had ceased and even boating was considered hazardous. However, since the 1990s, efforts have been taken to rehabilitate the river. Shared pathways for walkers and cyclists were built to facilitate this. One of the main features of this path is the various bridges for pedestrians, rail and cars.
Treadwell was engaged to supply the FRP decking for one of these pedestrian bridges.
Project Challenges
- Selected decking would have to accommodate concentrated point weight loadings.
- Being used by cyclists, pedestrians and their pets, the surface had to be non-slip while ensuring animal paws would not snag.
