West Camden STP FRP Odour Control Cover Case Study

This page focuses on the West Camden Sewage Treatment Plant project in Sydney, NSW, where Treadwell supplied an FRP odour control cover solution for a Sydney Water wastewater treatment facility. The project formed part of ongoing site upgrades and required improved odour control across key process areas, while keeping installation efficient and minimising disruption to operations.

Treadwell was engaged by Downer BMD to deliver the odour control scope end to end. The solution began with EcoEX™ SureLine® Heavy Duty odour control covers and developed into a lift-in / lift-out cover system mounted on a custom ArchitEX™ FRP L-Beam pultrusion system. This approach allowed approximately 1,500 sqm of covers to be installed over the balance tank area within two days.

The scope also included FRP odour ducting, EcoEX™ hatches, associated fasteners and support brackets, and GratEX® FRP square grating. The installation was completed without the need for on-site fibreglass connections, helping simplify delivery and reduce time on site.

Key Benefits

Fast installation with reduced site disruption

Speed of installation was a critical project requirement. The custom lift-in / lift-out system allowed approximately 1,500 sqm of covers to be installed over the balance tank area within two days, helping reduce operational disruption and time on site.

Complete odour containment solution

The existing tank had no covers, while new plant processes required a full odour containment system. Treadwell supplied a complete FRP solution covering the balance tank area, including heavy-duty covers, ducting, hatches, fasteners and supporting components.

Corrosion resistance in harsh sewage treatment conditions

Sewage treatment environments can include corrosive gases such as hydrogen sulphide. Treadwell’s FRP system was selected to provide durable, corrosion-resistant long-term performance in this harsh, odorous environment.

Low maintenance performance

The project required a long-term solution that would not need regular repairs or replacements. The corrosion-resistant nature of FRP supports a virtually maintenance-free system suited to wastewater treatment environments.

Airtight hydraulic sealing for odour control

EcoEX™ SureLine® HD covers are manufactured from premium quality resins with reinforced membranes. The system creates an airtight hydraulic seal that helps contain odours and prevent their release.

Lift-in / lift-out panel functionality

The custom ArchitEX™ L-Beam pultrusion system created full lift-in / lift-out covers with integrated lifting points built into the perimeter beam. This allows panels to be installed, removed and maintained efficiently without additional site modifications.

Lightweight FRP handling advantages

FRP is lightweight, which supports faster installation and can reduce Treadwell transport and handling costs, especially on large-scale wastewater treatment sites.

Operational access and safety support

The SureLine® HD panels are trafficable and strong enough to support handrails, improving safety for maintenance personnel. The system can also be configured with inspection, maintenance and access hatches, including integrated safety grates.

Reduced on-site fibreglass works

Treadwell supplied all odour ducting, and the installation was completed without the need for on-site fibreglass connections. This helped streamline installation and reduce complexity on site.

Applications

Sewage treatment plant balance tanks

This solution was used over the balance tank area at West Camden Sewage Treatment Plant, where a large-scale odour control cover system was required across approximately 1,500 sqm.

Odour control upgrades on existing tanks

The existing tank did not have covers, and new processes required a full odour containment solution. This makes the project relevant to treatment plants upgrading uncovered tanks or retrofitting odour control systems to existing infrastructure.

Hydrogen sulphide exposed environments

The project had to account for corrosive gases, including hydrogen sulphide. FRP covers and ducting are well suited to odorous wastewater environments where long-term corrosion resistance is important.

Large scale lift-in / lift-out cover systems

The custom ArchitEX™ L-Beam pultrusion system allowed the covers to be lifted in and out as full panels. This is useful where future maintenance, access or equipment inspection may require safe and efficient panel removal.

Trafficable treatment plant covers

The SureLine® HD cover system can support operational access and handrails, making it suitable where maintenance personnel need safe access over covered process areas.

Odour ducting integration

Treadwell supplied the odour ducting as part of the same project scope. This is useful where cover and ductwork interfaces need to be coordinated to avoid installation issues and reduce the need for site fibreglass connections.

Treatment plant projects requiring minimal downtime

Because speed of installation was a major requirement, this project is relevant to wastewater facilities where plant operations need to continue with minimal disruption during upgrades.

Access hatches and safety grate integration

SureLine® HD systems can include inspection, maintenance and access hatches, with options for integrated safety grates. This supports routine inspection, sampling and maintenance while improving operator safety.

FRP structural support integration

The project used custom ArchitEX™ FRP L-Beam structural profiles to support the lift-in / lift-out cover format. This shows how FRP structural profiles can be integrated with cover systems for site-specific requirements.
