Cooks River Bridge
Cooks River Bridge
This river once held the dubious honour of being known as Australia’s most polluted river. In the 1970s, it was a toxic cocktail of diesel, mercury, battery and cyanide, taking in sewage and waste dumps. Natural wildlife in the area had disappeared, swimming had ceased and even boating was considered hazardous. However, since the 1990s, efforts have been taken to rehabilitate the river. Shared pathways for walkers and cyclists were built to facilitate this. One of the main features of this path is the various bridges for pedestrians, rail and cars.
Treadwell was engaged to supply the FRP decking for one of these pedestrian bridges.
Project Challenges
- Selected decking would have to accommodate concentrated point weight loadings.
- Being used by cyclists, pedestrians and their pets, the surface had to be non-slip while ensuring animal paws would not snag.
Project Information
Project Category: Recreational Public Infrastructure
Scope of Work: Supply FRP decking for bridge
Treadwell Products :
- EX-Series® GratEX® FRP Solid Surface Grating
Treadwell Solution
- GratEX® Solid Surface grating features all the benefits of the square mesh grating, with a covered solid top.
- Unlike steel, the anti-slip surface does not impact the load carrying capacity.
- The solid surface eliminates the risk of small animals getting caught in open apertures.
- FRP is simply fabricated and modified on site. This means there is no need for any hot works permit.
- Being lightweight and easy to install, FRP is very manageable during construction.
- Given the nature of FRP, any system utilizing it is virtually maintenance free, keeping maintenance costs to a minimum.
