This Standard was prepared in conjunction with AS2156.1 which you can view here. AS2156.2 covers Infrastructure Design. It recognises that walking tracks are in environments valued by users for their natural and cultural qualities. This influences the type of structure used, taking into consideration the impact of visitors and track infrastructure on the environment, as well as accessibility.

AS2156.2 does not cover structures intended to carry livestock or vehicles.

Structures should be of durable materials and easily maintained. It may also be necessary to consider the effects of vegetation on the structure, for example, tree roots or falling tree limbs. Ease of transportation for materials and equipment to site and its consequent limitations on the standard of workmanship should also be taken into consideration.
Being substantially lighter in weight compared to steel, FRP has been successfully installed in remote locations, as the material can be easily heli-lifted or even carried without the need for heavy machinery to site.
In addition to the impact of these structures on the environment, load factors are also taken into account. Live, snow and wind load all play a significant part in the design. The provision of barriers are necessary where an opening in a deck creates a fall hazard. Stairs and ladders should be avoided wherever possible and typically Track Classes 1 & 2 shall not have ladders.
