Yunggorendi Cultural Gathering Space Flinders University, South Australia – Built on the principles of minimal disturbance and celebrating landscape, these decks provide access for people of all abilities. Drawing inspiration from fallen gum trees, the decks form overlapping structures that surround a central amphitheatre space, facilitating a broad range of uses; from private study nooks to large capacity events.
Treadwell was engaged to supply the FRP decking for the structure.
Project Challenges
- Selected decking had to allow re-vegetation of the earth below.
- Decking had to be wheelchair friendly as well as have an anti-slip surface.
- Decking had to remain robust while exposed to the outdoor elements.

Treadwell Solution
- The aperture in the grating allows sunlight, rain and other elements to fall through, enabling uninterrupted re-vegetation of the site. This also eliminates the risk of stagnant debris.
- GratEX® FRP grating is constructed as a large single piece panel, ensuring a uniform surface, without large gaps between panels. It is also able to withstand the weight loading of heavy foot traffic and wheelchairs.
- Treadwell’s FRP products are constructed from premium resin systems that include corrosion resistant properties and UV inhibitors, making it ideal for this outdoor application.
- Being lightweight, the use of FRP minimises the weight loading of the structure on the natural environment.
- FRP is simply fabricated and modified on site. This means there is no need for any hot works permit.
- Given the nature of FRP, any system utilising it is virtually maintenance free, keeping maintenance costs to a minimum.
