Hybrid FRP Stair Treads for Qantas Boarding Gates
Traditional pre-cast concrete stair treads for boarding gates are often costly and bulky. Qantas, a leading Australian airline, sought a lightweight, aesthetically pleasing, and cost-effective alternative. They approached an architectural design firm, who in turn reached out to Treadwell for a solution.
Treadwell’s experienced team embraced this challenge, proposing a solution that was safe, lightweight, aesthetically appealing, weather-resistant, and robust enough to replace the conventional concrete system. The team utilised FRP pultruded grating as a substrate due to its excellent ability to span 1500mm wide.
A unique hybrid product was developed, integrating StairSAFE® and DeckSAFE® moulded into the GridEX® substrate. This combination proved significantly lighter than concrete, simplifying installation and reducing risks associated with heavier products. Critically, it also delivered the intended cost savings for Qantas.
The developed product was coated with grey polyurethane to maximise weather resistance, featuring an evident yellow nosing for visibility. This hybrid solution for Qantas is set to provide a lengthy, maintenance-free design life, offering lasting performance and aesthetic appeal.
