McCauley's Cycleway
McCauley's Cycleway
McCauley’s Beach, New South Wales – As part of a plan to encourage more people to explore alternative transport options, Wollongong City Council sought community feedback on proposed new routes as well as modifications to the current routes. To enforce their commitment to providing safe and accessible infrastructure for residents and visitors, the council deemed the highly utilised McCauley’s cycleway bridge needed to be redone, including the replacement of the decking.
Treadwell was engaged to supply the FRP grating for this cycleway.
Project Challenges
- The selected material would be exposed to water and sand from the beach. It had to be ensured that debris would not stagnate on the surface.
- The decking had to withstand high loading points.
- Heavy usage meant that there had to be minimal downtime for maintenance.

- EX-Series® GratEX® FRP Mini Mesh Grating
Treadwell Solution
- GratEX® FRP grating is constructed with an anti-slip surface, and features corrosion resistant, termite and rot proof properties.
- The aperture in GratEX® FRP Mini Mesh grating allows water and debris to fall through, eliminating the risk of stagnant water, thus creating a self-maintaining anti-slip surface.
- GratEX® is robust and able to withstand high weight loading.
- FRP is simply fabricated and modified on site. This means there is no need for any hot works permit.
- Being lightweight and easy to install, FRP is very manageable during construction.
- Given the nature of FRP, any system utilising it is virtually maintenance free, keeping maintenance costs to a minimum.
